Mergel Kratzer is the creative output of the musician and producer Joel Nygren. On his left hand he has model and performance artist Angelica Klüft - known as Thistel - working on visuals and costume design for their liveshows. She is also a great batterist and together with keyboardist Julia they all compose and perform as a way to express themselves.
Joel begun making electronic music in 2004, finding his inspiration from science and technology among limestones and medieval ruins on the island of Gotland.
"I like synthesizers and the ways to create sounds artificially," he says. "Sound is such a complex form of energy, and converting it to electromagnetic waves gives you the ability to play god with one of natures most fundamental ways to communicate. The ways harmonics and rhythms affects us people is really, really interesting..."
These days Mergel Kratzer operates in Gothenburg, and music has become something of a lifestyle for Joel:
"I really see music as therapy. I just can't live without it. Sometimes my mind is like a black hole, sucking in all information that comes near. If I cant get something out of it, it becomes a real mess in there."
Instead of the mess Joel is talking about, the influences ends up as concepts and lyrics for his songs. They are most of the time fictional, but might have something to say about the world we live in...
After releasing the Maxi Single "Virus" on Swedish underground label "Crazy Bear Records", Joel decided to take their upcoming album release in his own hands. "I wanted to have full control of the entire production-chain, and the rights to use my own music", he explains.
RecDep was born as the name for Mergel Kratzer's music, and Isotop become name of the album. A very promising release, it has been well spoken about among criticans and contains an interesting blend of songs, showing all sides of their repertoire. An upcoming tour will follow this release, and the work on new material has already begun...
