Look at that man. He just screams cool, in a "I'm so cool I don't have to scream it" kind of way. That shaded legend is Dereb Desalegn, the eponymous frontman for Dereb The Ambassador, the funkier-than-thou project for Desalegn and producer Tony Buchan. Corralling a bunch of incredible musicians, Dereb The Ambassador recorded their self-titled debut in just two days in Sydney's now-defunct Electric Avenue Studios last year, on a stack of old equipment that dates back to the Seventies.  
 
The album is a musical triumph, a wonderful fusion of afrobeat, traditional Ethiopian and '60s funk. Unless you speak Ethiopian, you won't understand anything Dereb Desalegn is singing, but you won't even notice when you're listening to this album. The amazing grooves are just way too infectious for you to even care what he's singing about. (I'm sure the lyrics are great though, Dereb.) 
 
Dereb Desalegn's been a pretty busy guy since moving to Australia from Ethiopia a couple of years ago. He recorded an album with John Butler Trio drummer Nicky Bomba in 2006, as well as performing and recording with his band Lion Of Judah. But Dereb The Ambassador is arguably his most exciting project to date. Keep an ear out for the album when it drops in March.
