[ Orbit Over Luna ] is the musical alias of Shannon Penner, a multi-instrumentalist, composer, sound designer and animator in Toronto, Ontario. Shannon grew up not necessarily writing music but playing it all the time. Going through many different styles over the years from metal to new wave to grunge it wasn’t until he discovered the ambient guitar driven music of [ Hammock ] in 2005 that the concept of Orbit Over Luna took shape.

Always interested in new or atypical ways of doing things the music of OOL is primarily made using software. The use of amp modeling software is used primarily because of budget and space issues, but the advances is sampling technology has opened up many other exciting possibilities. Many times instead of just recording a track, Shannon will sample an instrument so that it can be used in the future as well.

OOL’s foremost desire in writing music is to create mood and sonic texture. Not attempting to write specific melodic structures or forms, the music is free to just be what it is in order to let the mood of the piece come across. [ 京都/奈良 – Kyoto/Nara ] is the first in a series of EPs inspired by a trip to Japan. Not attempting to create the music of Japan the music instead is the emotional impression of Japan seen through Shannon’s personal musical lens. The tracks, primarily instrumental, also weave location sounds that Shannon recorded while there.
