Tamara Schlesinger’s new solo album “The Procession” is OUT NOW!
Funded by Creative Scotland, this album sees Tamara, lead singer of indie folk band 6 Day Riot record in her native Glasgow for the first time and experiment with a new sound and a new way of working.
Built around an original concept of interweaving layers of a capella vocals, Tamara was able to recruit the cream of Scottish musical talent to help develop and embellish this; incorporating strings, electric guitar and percussion from musicians whose previous collaborations include work with Teenage Fanclub, Salsa Celtica, Emeli Sande, Texas and Isobel Campbell.
The result is charming and utterly distinctive. Recurring themes of loss, uncertainty and doubt merge to form a whole that is somehow celebratory as well as meditative.
From quirky opener “Yai Yai” with its mesmerising mantra; building layers of looping vocals over ebbing waves of percussion and delicate guitar lines, you know this is an album unlike any other you’ll hear this year.
Album highlights include the irresistibly poppy “Get Down” a freewheeling exhortation to make the most of our limited time on Earth, the splendid “So Long” which feels like a haunted toy box coming to life and the bubbling looping reverb of breakup hymn “Who’s Won”.
The first single from the record is the dark, catchy “Again”, which grows from a capella backing vocals to a huge rousing coda and serves as a perfect introduction to Tamara’s new direction.
After 6 years, three albums, syncs on Skins and Scream 4 and countless storming gigs, and festival appearances with 6 Day Riot, the opportunity to take these new songs on the road solo is thoroughly exciting.
FATEA MAGAZINE: “Tamara Schlesinger has delivered an album that she can be really proud of. In the right mood this is one of those albums that will take very few substitutions, but it’s not an album for all occasions and that’s not a bad thing, so much better to be a master, or mistress, of one. Thoughtful, reflective, chilling, enlightening, that’s more than enough for me.”
THE HERALD: “Everything is crafted with Kate Bush precision and delivered like a low-key Florence And The Machine.”
DiS: “swirling layers of Schlesinger’s irresistible tone sounding about as honey-ish and lacy as you might expect; congealing into a haze of harmony which you can lie on like a mattress.”
