Weghur
is a great example of the magic that can happen when the right combination of passion, talent, creativity, personalities come together. A chance jam session in 2005 led to an exchange of musical ideas that would eventually become the catalyst for the creation of Weghur -- a name that bears reference to a symbolic fusion of east and west. The three members of Weghur, each with unique musical backgrounds, approach performing and song writing by playing off each other's musical ideas. The result really defies description - Xinjiang rhythms intersect electric guitar, modern jazz and psychedelic rock elements and beats are held in place by a solid, danceable rhythm -- building a varied repertoire that also includes freestyle improvisation. Xinjiangnese guitarist/vocalist Hassan Mahmud began performing music in the streets of Shanghai since he was youngster and now plays in the best live music venues in the city-- this is his 8th year in Shanghai. Percussionist Maxime Lenik and bassist Jay Lasry, although from classical and jazz music backgrounds in France, both also embrace a vast musical path ranging from world to electronic music. They had previously collaborated on various classical, jazz and pop projects in France and Weghur is their first live project in Shanghai. The personalities vary as much as the musical influence all adding to the onstage intensity during improvisation and the members admit that many of the performances just simply happen and are unfortunately unlikely to be heard ever again -- at least unless somebody decides to hit the 'record' button. Yet the temporal qualities of their live improvisation lend a "you had to be there" kind of feel to the night. Weghur’s recent win at the Global Battle of Bands 2009 (Shanghai final) confirms their growing stage talent and the steady exposure they are getting from touring will only help take them to that proverbial next level. But the members are keen to keep it simple, fresh and honest. The trio's approach is organic in nature and growth has come from playing out -- a lot.
