by  Rolf SemprebonAn outgrowth of a workshop of the Association Aide aux Musiques Innovatrices ("Assistance for Innovative Music"), in Marseille, France, Les Sculpteurs was a one-off project led by Otomo Yoshihide that was something of a veritable super-group of outside music artists from around the world, combined with some of Marseille's best local DJs. With the lineup of cello, female vocals, sampler, and five turntable artists, it certainly was a very strange combination.
This fascinating project had its beginnings in 1995, when turntable artists Otomo Yoshihide and Christian Marclay met three young local DJs, Eric M, DJ Sky, and DJ Rebel at an Association Aide aux Musiques Innovatrices workshop on improvised and new music at La Friche Belle de Mai arts and cultural center in Marseille, France. In the early summer of the next year, Yoshihide returned to Marseille to form a group with the three French DJs. Along with him came an international cast of avant-garde performers, including cello player Tom Cora, Japanese electronic artist Sachiko M., American vocalist Catherine Jauniaux, and another turntable artist, Tsunoda Tsuguto. The project, with its heavy emphasis on turntablism, was known as Les Sculpteurs de Vinyl. They performed at the Mimi Festival in Arles, France, in July of 1996 and also recorded some studio tracks that same month. Yoshihide, with the help of Kondo Yoshiaki, mixed the material in September of 1996, and the next year it was released on the CD Memory & Money on the Stupeur & Trompette label. The project was a one-time endeavor, and Yoshihide and the others have not returned to it since then.
