小简介
Andy Gower is a singer songwriter from Stoke-on-Trent England, a post-industrial northern city between Manchester and Birmingham.Compared to both Billy Bragg and Noel Gallagher among others, Andy’s story is one to warm the cockles of any real music lover’s heart. In a band for most of his twenties, Andy hangs up his guitar late 1999 content to shelve his songs and musical career having given it his best shot like many musicians before and after.Life moves on and so does Andy taking various dead-end jobs. One of them involves working nightshift on WH Smiths packing newspapers where new colleagues hear his old songs and keep pestering him to start playing them again. Andy’s not interested.
One of his workmates has to give up work for a bad back and tells Andy he’s emigrating to warmer climates for health reasons.
He begs Andy to play at his leaving party, where Andy reluctantly agrees to do an acoustic gig. There’s only one small problem – the whole story is a trick to get Andy playing.
Andy duly turns up, plays an acoustic set of old and new material and everyone is blown away.
The people behind Stoke’s Sugarmill venue are so impressed with the gig that they instantly offer Andy a support slot with Simple Kid. Andy admits to having secretly enjoyed his trick show agrees to see how it goes.
The Simple Kid gig is a runaway success with the audience respectfully silent and spellbound by Andy’s simple melodic and heartfelt tunes. The between song applause is genuine and unanimous. Andy Gower has the bug again.
Over the next 12 months further shows follow including gigs with Stephen Fretwell, Puressence, Glen Tilbrook, David Ford, Lightning Seeds, BlackBud, Scott Matthews and Paulo Nutini.
Each show see Andy pick up more genuine and real fans and with the advent of the MySpace age (something his 1990’s band had no access to) Andy’s music starts to reach fans all over the world – so far people from as far a-field as Australia and Japan have been in touch.
Fast-forward to last October and after having supported Scott Matthews at The Sugarmill (where Andy can now attract over 300 fans who all sing along to every word) Andy is invited to support Scott on his UK tour.
2007 is upon us and armed with a new found confidence in his music and a genuine desire not for fame and fortune (although it’d be a nice problem to have) but simply to play his songs and get out there, Andy Gower is set to release his debut album ‘I Live and I Wonder’
Not one record label has been approached for a deal, after all who needs record labels these days. Just start your own and use the internet to spread your music.
Says Andy: “Back in the days when I was in a band we wanted it too much and we let our pursuit of success get in the way of the music. Now I’m just over the moon to be able to play my songs and get such a positive reaction from the public.”
“I’m not supposed to be here now doing this. I was genuinely tricked into playing again and then with the help and encouragement of friends and family it’s just gathered pace ever since.”
“I’m not desperate for fame I just want to play my songs and therefore I’d be as content in a years time to know 10,000 people had downloaded or copied my album as I would be if they’d bought it. In fact I think we’ll positively encourage it.”
“As far as I’m concerned I can’t lose and that’s a gamble anyone would be up for having a go with. I’m proud of my songs and there’s nothing wrong with that and hearing people singing them back at the stage is one of life’s ultimate thrills. Why should I be denied that?”
