It's quite ironic that it should be so hard to get your hands on a decent dose of peripheral and obscure pop culture, when you live in a peripheral and obscure place. But that's how it is. And that's how it was. Halvard and I grew up in a place like that, a shit hole town called Trondheim, where we would spend much time trying to find routes to substantial knowledge, like 'what does the MC5 sound like', and 'who is The Haze,' and 'where is Pahrump?' The road to that information would often be complex and crooked, and it would sometimes involve getting drunk on the roof of the local night club, deciding in a moonshine infused moment of enlightenment that it would be wise to walk over to the edge of the roof and piss down on the street 30 meters down, screaming 'YOURE ALL WHORES!!' to the passer-bys down there. Then step back and silently ponder 'maybe Im a whore, too?' Not that prostitution has anything to do with it. But that's the point, I guess. Not much has anything to do with anything, when you're on a quest like ours in a place like that. It's all a hysterical and all-encompassing rummage for anything of cultural consequence, in a place where the very mention of that word 'culture' for some weird, unexplainable reason would throw the locals into aggressive fits shouting 'Soccer is culture!!! Am I right?! AM I RIGHT?!' Ah, well ... a shit hole town. Like any town you grow up in.
Some people cave in, settle down, and sooth themselves with a self-hypnotic mantra, repeating over and over again, 'Its a jolly good place, actually. Great people, too.' Others will let the desperate consequences of their solitary cultivation travails ping-pong around in the darkest rooms of their souls for years always pouring additional obscure cultural elements into the mix, more, and more, and more, before they go into a recording studio and lock the doors and don't come back out in weeks. And if they're The Teenage Idols they'll come out carrying an album called 'Something Wicked'. Which is what The Teenage Idols just did. It's a record we're all going to enjoy. In the end, whether we come from Trondheim, or Stockholm, or Los Angeles for that sake ... or Pahrump ... we all come from a shit hole town.
