Mara Carlyle is a London-based singer-songwriter signed to EMI subsidiary Charisma. She plays the saw and the guitar.
Carlyle's debut album The Lovely was released on Matthew Herbert's label, Accidental Records, in 2004. It consisted mostly of original compositions, as well as "I Blame You Not", an English-language reworking of Schumann's "Ich grolle nicht".
The I Blame Dido EP was released in May 2005.It contained "I Blame You Not" and a version of "Dido's Lament" by Henry Purcell. Carlyle has denied that the EP's title is a swipe at the singer-songwriter Dido.
Carlyle contributed vocals and saw to several tracks on Guillemots' 2006 Mercury Music Prize-nominated album Through The Windowpane, and in 2008 contributed backing vocals to a track called 'Divine' on Finnish electro-pop artist HK119's 2nd album, Fast, Cheap And Out Of Control.
An EP of new material, Ancient and Modern, was released in 2008. Her second album, Nuzzle, has been completed but its release has been delayed by her record label. According to Carlyle, the album "continues to languish pointlessly, like a pirated ship off the coast of Somalia."
December 2008 saw the release of Classist, a collaboration with composer Max de Wardener under the name "Max de Mara". Carlyle contributed four tracks adapted from Handel, Purcell, Walford Davies and Jacques Offenbach. The album is a limited edition of 333 copies available through Stanley Donwood's Six Inch Records.
