There are artists who have to be in the media spotlight every week to avoid being forgotten – or exchanged for new names. And then there are ”one of a kind” artists, impossible to replace. Artists like Jennifer Brown. It’s been almost six years since her previous album, Home, was released. But, like all good things, her new album is well worth the wait. Rooted in classic soul, it brings the best of the sixties and seventies into the 21st Century. Luxurious instrumentation and arrangements work together to bring out the best out in Jennier’s voice. The album was produced by Peter Kvint and mixed by Ronnie Lahti, two of the most renowned names in the Swedish music industry, while strings and brass were recorded at the prestigeous Atlantis studio in Stockholm. This is a quality album, featuring a string of possible singles. It is guaranteed to get the attention, focus and promotion it deserves from everyone involved in the launch of the album. 
 
This is also an album that’s closing circles. After having released her debut album in 1994, Jennifer learned that she reminded people of the great soul singers of the past, that she sounded mature beyond her years. Today, she truly belongs among the greats, and has the experience to back it up. You can hear it in her singing, and the content of the songs. You will also feel it in the warmth and relaxed sense of life-affirmation that she radiates. 
 
Originally from Gothenburg, Sweden, Jennifer Brown has used a varied musical palette since releasing her first album Giving You The Best in 1994. She has gone from soul ballads and contemporary R&B, via acoustic singer-songwriter territory through to melodic radio pop. Over the years, has achieved considerable commercial success, both domestically and international, as well as the respect from critics. ”At the beginning, you are usually a bit naive – everything is big and fun, says Jennifer. A few years into your career, on the other hand, it’s easy to over-analyze and start planning everything. This is the point where you run the risk of becoming cynical. It was to avoid this that I started colaborating with Billy Mann for the album Vera in 1999. I wanted to find a genuine, less polished way of expressing myself”. 
The following album, Home (2003) was made with a similar attitude. Following the touring and taking care of all her promotional duties for the album, Jennifer did what she always does: she travelled to make room for new ideas. ”I find it hard to just go in and write another album. In order to have something to say, I need to live and experience things”. 
 
Jennifer spent a lot of time in the U.S. – mainly New York City and San Franscisco – as well as travelling to India. When she returned, she was offered a major role in the feature film musical Frortsungar (Suburban Kids), which reached the Swedish movie theatres in 2006, to great acclaim. 
Then she became pregnant. At the time of her daughter’s birth, she had demos for a full album. However, she decided to stay home with her daughter for 18 months. When the time came for her to return to making music, she felt that she was at a crossroads. She felt that the songs that were already written were strong. However, as a first-time parent, a person comes in contact with reflections and feelings that are completely new. Jennifer found that even the sentimentality was more rooted in reality. She was not the same. 
 
Jnnifer made the decision that she wanted to work with a company encompassing all aspects of the music business, as well as being artist-friendly. Making sure that Lionheart International understood her ideas and didn’t want to rush her into anything, a record- and management deal was made. Jennifer then contacted producer Peter Kvint, whose work she had always had a lot of respect for, and admired from a distance. The fact that Kvint isn’t usually associated with soul music, made the concept of a possible collaboration even more exciting to her. 
”When I met him, I played him some of my ideas, and told him about my vision for the album. He got it right away”, remembers Jennifer. 
Fully aware of the fact that while a concept can be discussed forever, the only things that actually count are the resulting songs, they began by writing a song together. The chemistry was instant, resulting in the song Never Been Here Before. This initial co-write was followed by a creative flow, that didn’t stop before they had a complete album on their hands. Both music and lyrics were written in Peter’s studio in Stockholm, and the songs have a vintage feel. Echoes can be traced from classic Motown soul, as well as a pop aesthetic that stems from a time where radio hits were signed Bacharach/David. In a time where it is easy to record a sparse album in your living room, they decided to go for a luxurious production that oozes timelessness and quality. Mr Running Man, which will be the second domestic single release, is about all the suits and ties who seem to be slaves to their watch, career and money and never take the time to stop and feel. 
The album’s closer, Never Give Up On Love Overnight, has an uplifting feel that stays with the listener long after the album has finished. In between, we are taken on a journey of emotions, thoughts, melodies and exquisite musical detail. Throughout, Jennifer sings like she’s never sung before. A great example is Never Been Here before: a dramatic ballad that glitters and shows her full range as a vocalist. It also signals Jennifer’s return to her soul roots. 
”The song will be my entry for the Swedish part of the Eurovision Contest, and since the song is very ”me”, and also representative of the album, it feels like the best of both worlds. The song is so so strong and natural in its musical language, that it’s all about expression to me. It’s also a great feeling to know that it was the very first song we wrote together. When the album production was nearing the end, we returned an refined it just a little. It gave us both a sense of ”mission accomplished”, Jennifer smiles. 
 
Interesting careers always go in cycles. What is right for one period of time, can feel contrived later on – and the other way around. Jennifer Brown has always trusted her intuition. She strongly believes that anything is possible, even if it takes a different shape. With Vera, she decided to go against the advice of many so-called industry experts. She deliberately discarded the ”Swedish Queen of Soul” moniker – and made her biggest album to date. 
This time, she is ready to pick up the mantle again. And you have to agree that it suits her even better today.
