He is one of a very select group of musicians who helped shape the sound of pop, rock and RnB in the world today.
Artie Kaplan’s saxophone can be heard on over 150 Top Ten records. His unmistakable sound made him one of the most in-demand session players, and his solos on many records created their own signature riff. He is on hits like Connie Francis’ “My Heart Has A Mind of Its Own”, Neil Sedaka’s “Happy Birthday Sweet Sixteen” and “Breaking Up Is Hard To Do”, Little Eva’s ”Locomotion”, The Chiffons “One Fine Day”, Jay & The Americans “Come A Little Bit Closer”, Len Barry’s “1-2-3”, Bobby Hebb’s “Sunny”, Spanky & Our Gang’s “Sunday Will Never Be The Same’, Neil Diamond’s “Solitary Man”. He played on Barry Manilow’s first record “Mandy” and then worked on his next four albums. He played on records by Carole King, Janis Ian, Bobbi Blue Bland, Peaches and Herb, Brook Benton, The Strangeloves, Janis Ian, Dixie Cups, Esther Phillips, Barry Mann, The Cookies and countless others featuring his baritone, tenor and alto sax, flute and piccolo.
Kaplan was also a most important music contractor in rock during that era. In addition to contracting for hundreds of records, he also contracted for film and was the music coordinator for “The Midnight Cowboy” with Dustin Hoffman and Jon Voight, “The Verdict” with Paul Newman, “Arthur” with Liza Minelli and Dudley Moore, “Fame” and many more.
He wrote and produced the music for Metromedia Television’s “Wonderama” children’s show, a Sunday morning favorite. Some of his memorable songs from that show are “Kids Are People Too” and “Oh Gee It’s Great To Be A Kid”. Both titles were the theme song of the show at various times. In the 70’s Kaplan changed directions and become a singer-songwriter. His album “Confessions Of A Male Chauvinist Pig” was the result of those changes and became a best seller in Europe. The lp contains two hits, “Harmony” and ”Bensonhurst Blues”, and continues to be a success in many European countries three decades after its original release. “Bensonhurst Blues” also appears on the front and back title credits of the French film “Pour La Peau d’un Flick” sung by Oscar Benton.
The 80’s and 90’s Kaplan devoted his musical talents to developing, composing and performing on a variety of projects. He created the CDs “Fun Time For Kids” and “Barnyard Stories and Poems”, as well as a story book aimed at the lucrative children’s market. He contracted the band for, and performed in, the Broadway show “Leader Of The Pack”, and toured with actor-musician George Segal in a Dixieland Band.
In the new millennium, Artie Kaplan wrote and recorded 12 songs. His voice is like velvet gravel that soulfully expresses his passionate and playful take on life. The album is carefully crafted using his five decades of making music. The selection of material takes you on a journey with reminiscences from classic Louis Armstrong to Louis Prima and beyond, all in Artie Kaplan’s own inimitable style.
