Long Story Short spawned from a deep musical connection between founding members Nicky James & Dan Luka. The two had been friends for years and began co-writing songs together in October 2009. But it wasn't until one night in December of that same year, the two playing their acoustic guitars under the California night sky that it fully hit them. "It was almost surreal how well we connected musically" says Dan Luka, lead singer and guitarist of the band. "We started playing and these ideas just kept coming out of nowhere. They had this freshness, an exciting sense of creating something truly unique. I looked at Nicky James and we knew instantly that we had to make this happen."
Not wasting much time, only days after making the decision to form the band the two went into the studio to record a demo CD. The two-day session (which resulted in the recording of 8 new songs) only confirmed the gut feeling the two had been having. "While recording these songs in studio, there was a consistent sense of magic. A feeling like 'this is where I belong'. Me, Dan and our music. It was a perfect formula and you will never get the same results if you change that. We had to capture that lightning.", says Nicky James, pianist and vocalist in the band. "We co-write most of these songs because we have gone through similar things growing up, so when we write a song we really feel it. We made the promise to each other that we would see this through no matter what. And that's what we're doing", he adds.
Releasing some of the demos on the internet for a short period of time, including songs such as "Running From The Sun", "Intervention" and "Eternal Smile" the band soon started to create a solid fan base online. With groups of fans located in the Philippines, Germany, Canada, the United States and South Africa it was time to take things to the next level.
"Not long after we recorded our demo album we started asking ourselves the question of 'what's next? where can we take this?' - and the answer was right in front of us, it was all up to us. We started writing new material right away and finally made the decision to record a full length album".
The band has since teamed up with John Nathaniel, a Canadian-based gold-certified record producer who works with local hit artists such as Marie Mai and Pat Groulx, to produce their debut album. Nathaniel is also lending a hand in co-writing some of the songs on the album such as fan favorite "What Mattered Most" which was released on iTunes on April 16th and which within only a month generated several thousands of plays online.
"We are working full-steam on this album. Personally, my goal is to make songs that hit your heart and that you can connect to." says Nicky James. "You truly only get the chance to make your first record once in your life" Dan agrees, "we are very aware of this and that is why we want to make this one time count. We want to leave a mark on people. To me, these songs are like the sound track to my life. We write about the good, the bad and the ugly in life. Sometimes, these words are buried quite deep inside, so when they finally come out we know that there is probably someone out there who has been wanting to say the same things as us but didn't quite know how."
With recording sessions ongoing, the band is continuing their work on the album as we speak, and will be releasing a select couple of songs from the bunch in the coming months with a release of the full album planned for later in the year.
