Naomi Greenwald’s debut full-length album Darkbloom will be released in early 2011. A rich and highly textured collection of original songs, Darkbloom traverses several genres that have influenced Naomi’s unique songwriting style since she began playing guitar while growing up in northeastern Pennsylvania. Teaming up with producer Dave Trumfio (Wilco, Built to Spill, OK Go!), Naomi recorded ten original songs to create her debut full length album.
After living in Manhattan and Brooklyn, Naomi moved to Los Angeles in 2007 to pursue a PhD in comparative literature at USC. In the summer after her first year, she recorded an EP which was self-released in early 2009 to good reviews. Shows were played with some fantastic LA players including Jason Orme on guitar (Alanis Morisette, Desktop Rulers), Nick Rosen on bass (Perry Farell, Jon Brion), and Fern Sanchez on drums (Rachael Yamagata, Pete Yorn). Studies continued as did the songwriting and the concept for Darkbloom.
In early 2010, Naomi went back in the studio, invited her touring members as well as enlisted Vincent Jones (Cowboy Junkies, Sarah McLauchlan) to play piano and keys and The Double D’s to play horns. Members from the SoCal VoCals—USC’s a cappella group—were also brought in to sing background vocals.
Over the course of the ten tracks on Darkbloom, Naomi's lyrics are both defiant and restrained, tempered by her earnest, soulful voice. While her musical style varies throughout the album, each track—from the rock-like crooning of “Cautionary Tale” to the surging, lilting heartache of “Price You Pay”—is grounded by Naomi’s resounding vocal presence.
Currently 4 songs from the new album are streaming and "Cautionary Tale" is now available for a free download. Stay tuned for more about Darkbloom's release, more live shows and more Naomi!
